FANEXPO Canada—2017

NERD OUT

It’s that time of the year again, folks. Each year I attend the FanExpo convention that’s held here in Canada and I try to cosplay. Previous years when I went I dressed as Nana Osaki during my first Expo, another time I went as L from Deathnote. Last year I didn’t get a chance to do so, but this year I planned a special one when I found out that the main female cast of RWBY by Rooster Teeth were coming to visit! I decided to cosplay as Blake Belladonna. Her character is one of my favourite, from her love of books, introverted life style, and her damn weapon the Gambol Shroud!

She has such a cool weapon, fans still don’t fully understand how it all works. It’s a sword with a sheath that’s also a blade and she has a gun-a-rang mode for long distance shooting with the sword. One of the things I really love about RWBY is how their weapons are designed, it’s too epic. They can all transform from one thing to another, a multipurpose weapon and I’ve always wanted one. The process of gathering my materials for this weren’t as easy as I thought it would be.

I decided to cosplay volume 2 Blake Belladonna as it wasn’t too revealing nor was it too layered of an attire to wear. I have to thank Lore and Michael’s for having the materials I needed for this cosplay. My friend Lore went through all the trouble of purchasing the materials for me from her work and take the transit home, with all these foam board and craft foams. I tried to take photos of my process, but I ended up just taking photos of the materials I used for my cosplay:

  • Tulle for the second layer of the butt cape ( I keep calling it that)
  • Two yards of fabric for the butt cape’s first layer
  • Craft and Foam board for the weapon

As for the clothing, I purchased them as is. The Intruder jacket was the toughest one for me to find materials for, especially since I didn’t have a sewing machine and I wasn’t planning on sewing these hands on.

The bow headband I bought had two layers of bow, so I spread them on top of one another using glue gun to make it look like a big bow/cat ears. I added the lavender tulle underneath the fabric, though I did end up cutting it too short. I used glue gun, craft glue to stick the materials together and Acrylic Paint for the added details. As for the boots, I just used an old one that I had. The process was tough, especially cutting the foam board but at the end I was quite happy with the results of my cosplay.

Here’s the Gambol Shroud:

I made two pieces, using the template provided by the generous and talented man on Deviant Art, Tatsutetsu! He has most of the weapons template for the RWBY characters, the instructions are pretty clear. You just have to choose your own materials to use. People actually recognized my cosplay, one vendor said she liked my bow. A few people took photos of me and I realized afterwards that I never got to ask them to tag me on it. So now they’re just floating around the net or in their gallery.

Here’s a photo my brother took:

I didn’t actually get to do much this year at the Expo, we went on a Friday. I was guiding and showing my boy friend everything seeing as it was his and his cousin’s first Expo. We went through the merch building where the celebrity signings and photo ops were at. My friend Lore went to go see Zachary Levi and she told us to tag along, so I got to meet him for a bit. He shook our hands and asked us our names. Such a nice guy, I have yet to watch Chuck though (I know, I know!).

Then we went through the Artist Alley, that one took a while to go through. Sadly, Nolen Lee the Punching Pandas artist wasn’t here this year so that was one artist down from my list to see. Saw Sakimichan booth but she wasn’t there, had the chance to see Angelina aka Albinwonderland. I finally had to courage to visit her booth and talk to her. I congratulated her as a newly wed, and I also got to leave a message for my friend Allison to Betty FelonShe is adorable, her style is so cute and Allison thinks she looks like Blake Belladonna with her unlimited bow styles and colour choices 😛

Then I stopped by Amanda Martin’s booth and finally introduced myself to her and she gave me a hug! She had saved me a Corked enamel pin, and I ended up purchasing one of her Contained bookmark from her Inktober series last year. They’re gorgeous! I did however forget to purchase her MerMay and Inktober booklets to have them signed as well, but I was too nervous and I only grabbed what I could remember 😭 Once they’re available online, I will grab a copy for myself!

You should check out Amanda’s work, they’re beautiful, she recently opened up an Etsy account as well so check that out! I then also ended up looking for the jewelry booth with the cool rings, I realized a few days after that it was the same vendor I purchased my Amazon ring from Ad Astra (click here for this post). I purchased a white stoned ring this time, she also had to resize it for me because I have small and thin fingers 😝.

After the Artist Alley, my brothers and I separated from my boy friend and his cousin as they had to leave. We went to line up for the RWBY cast panel, as we waited we were told that the cut off line was already made. The room was filled and not even half the people lining up were inside yet. Apparently, people already started lining up 5 hours before the panel and VIP members got to go in without needing to line up.

I was sad that we couldn’t attend, but at the same time I was super happy that RWBY was so popular at the Expo! We decided to just eat some poutine while waiting for the panel to end, 10 minutes before it ended we were heading for the Autograph and Photo-op and a line already started. We were so nervous, at first I only wanted an autograph then I realized I need to have a Photo-op as well. Barbara was chowing down Timbits and waving at the fans after eating one, she’s so funny. I wanted to see Arryn (obviously), my brother Matt was there for Barbara and Piolo wanted to meet Lindsay, because he’s a huge fan of the Achievement Hunters.

Arryn was such a sweetheart, I told her the story of my cat wanting to attack me with my bow ears on but once I took it off it’s like I didn’t exist. Then she told me she loved my Evenstar necklace and my ring (which was the one I purchased at the Expo) she showed me all her rings and said she loved rings. She made me choose which photo I wanted signed, and I asked to claim my hug and she stood up to give me one! As she was coming up she said she didn’t want to hug me too tight, because “I don’t want to ruin your Shroud!”. Then she asked if I wanted to take a photo, I told her she could do it as I suck at taking selfies. She took a selfie using my phone and then she took 3 selfies of both of us. I’m glad I decided to take a selfie, even though I looked silly in them. It was also cool that my brothers and I saw different people, If I had enough money in my budget for this Expo I would’ve asked for a group photo with all 4 of them! This was my first autograph and photo op from the Expo and it was pretty special 😀 Thanks, Arryn!

Here’s a photo of all my purchases at this year’s Expo:

FaneExpo Holiday Sale

Today, my brother, Lore and I went to the FanExpo Holiday sale. This was my first year taking part in this event, I wasn’t aware that this took place annually. People still came in all dressed up for the event, even thought it was -4°! Saw a lot of Christmas themed cosplayers though.

I saw some artists that I missed last year and some familiar faces that often take part in the Artist’s Alley. I ended up leaving with a decent haul:

From left to right bottom:

I finally decided to purchase Marceline with her guitar and hat, because really this depicts her character. Marceline is one of my favourite characters from Adventure Time. I already have the original one, but this one is a good add on.

I also purchased Freddy Fazbear stuffed toy from Five Nights at Freddy’s video game.

Umbreon stuffed toy, based on the Pokemon series.

The Nightmare Before Christmas tea stained art piece by Dara Gold. You can check out her work through here: Dara Gold Art. She even had tea-stained paper that you can choose from and she will draw your choice of illustration on it. They have the scent lingering around so it’s pretty cool!

The Gravity Falls Journal 3 (because who wouldn’t want to know what was actually written inside this book?) I also think I’d need UV light for this, there actually are blank pages.

Last but not the least, book/show based lip balm. I purchased the Polyjuice Potion, from Harry Potter book series with Vanilla Chai flavour and 2nd Breakfast based on the Lord of the Rings book series with Chai Tea Latte. This was made by Julie and Chris Ewing. They’re called the Popsquatch Designs. Check them out!

That’s everything! Now I need to figure out how to rearrange my cork-board to fit the new art illustration 🙂

Did any of you go to the FanExpo Holiday sale? If so, were you one of the cosplayers? Let me know what you guys thought of the one day event!

My Last Weekend of Summer

Cannot believe summer ended already, it sure went by so fast. I tried to make the best of my last weekend of summer. What could be the best way to end summer in Toronto, you ask?

How about going to CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) to try some of the deep fried food, play some games to win or catch the biggest Pokemon and shop ’til you drop in the Arts and Crafts building? I always enjoy going to CNE, because they have different kinds of food to try and they have different types of artists selling their amazing work. The artists/designers that I enjoy visiting when I have the chance to go to the Ex is Crywolf. That is actually where I first met them and where I bought my very first Crywolf piece. Then I ordered online; they have come a long way since then. They participate yearly at CNE but now they also have their own clothing store down at Ossington, they now also have a clothing line for your pets and jewelry to accessories with your Crywolf outfit. I decided to buy the Blue Jays tank, because it is often sold out whenever I tried to buy it. I also got a pug sticker 🙂 This was also when I finally formally introduced myself to Rose, Stephanie was not around sadly. She surprisingly still remembered me, they recognized me when I first visited their store when they newly opened. They asked if I was the girl from Instagram. When I saw Rose, she remembered my username! You guys should really check them out, they have some really trendy clothing line and the cutest stickers, patches, pins and more! I also found this cool shawl, I sadly forgot the name of the store. I do not recall whether she had a sign and the designer did not leave a card when I purchased, but she had the stylish patterns for these shawls. There was also this designer who sold wooden postcards, coasters and wall art; re-surfaced. There was also this artist who designed wooden bow tie that were one of a kind; The Two Guys Bow Tie. I sadly did not win any games this year, but my siblings did :p We even got to see the Air Show across the Ontario Center! Altogether, it was a fun Saturday with the family and I ended up buying some unique clothes. Even a present for my brother from Hazel Black!

My CNE Haul:

Another great way to spend your last weekend of summer would be by attending the FanExpo! Now, normally I would recommend going on a Saturday, because that is usually when all the best cosplay-ers show up and when the expo is at its peak but this year I could only make it for Sunday. It ends earlier on Sundays, but they do have better sales because it is the last day of the event. My brother and I were the only ones that went this year, I met up with my friend Lore and Bri joined us when the day ended. My goal was to attend two panels and the rest of my time would be to tour around the artists alley. The thing is, it was a bit chaotic this year. They lacked volunteers, so the walk from the North to the South building had traffic, crazy I know. I took a lot longer getting to one side and the other whenever I needed to go line up for a panel or see some artists. There were no numbers for the booths this year either, so I spent half my time running around looking for one of my favorite artists.

I already got there late, so I did not have much time to find certain artists but there was one that I needed to get to; Nolen. Nolen is the artist for Punching Pandas, some of you might have seen me retweet his art pieces on my twitter handle. If you do not know who this artist is, you should check him out. He makes the cutest and amazing art pieces and recently he added a sculpture of the pandas! I was lucky enough to grab one when I went, because they sold quickly! The cool part? I got #7 out of 25 and 7 is one of my favorite numbers 🙂 Coincidence? I think not. I also finally got a chance to buy his booklet, volume one. I got two pieces of artwork from him, one of the panda troopers and the other was of Hanzo as a Pandawatch! The best part was catching up with him and his wife Olwen, this was their second expo in Canada. I first discovered his pieces through Sketch Dailies and I followed his artwork from then on. We did not officially meet until last year’s FanExpo which was also his very first! It is always a pleasure to meet new artists and to have a chat with them. Sadly I did not get to visit Amanda Martin’s booth this year, I had trouble finding it, but you guys should check her out! I did get to see Randy who is the artist well known as itsbirdy. His pieces are so amazing, I bought one of Pikachu as L last year. There were other great ones that I saw but I did not have time to fully check them out this year, because my panels were too close to one another. But I am hoping to try and go for two days next year!

Here were my artist panel haul:

Q&A PANELS

Ben McKenzie’s panel started at 2PM and the line up starts about an hour or so beforehand. Thankfully Lore lined up to save spots for my brother and I. It was really cool to meet him, it was his very first Fanexpo! Everyone in there were either an OC fan or a Gotham fan, I was both :p Some fans asked the weirdest questions which made things a tad awkward for a few minutes, but he handles those quite well ha. You can probably find his Q&A panel online but for now you can just watch the video I took of his entrance in gif form and a very bad quality photo below 😮

FANEXPO2016_BenMcKenziefanexpo2016_benmckenzieintro

The second panel, which was also the best way to end the Expo was by attending the Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill panel! The line was from outside the panel room, up the stairs all the way down the building almost bordering the place from inside. It was insane! I was talking to my fellow fandom and we did not think we would make it, but we freaking did! I was seated all the way at the right side of the room, but I made it in and got to see two of the legends that changed my childhood. They were both so awesome, sadly not a lot of people near me knew who Kevin Conroy was. THE Kevin Conroy, can you imagine?! I was also disappointed that they did not show any clips of Kevin’s work but they did for Mark during the introduction 😦 Their relationship is so cute though, they’re my brotp for DC 😀 I sadly missed the dip that Kevin did with Mark at the end after they hugged, but I have no doubt my fellow expo-goers will have the video up soon enough. I only got a video of the entrance, I apologize for the terrible quality. Clearly my phone could not handle two legends in one room. (Credits to my brother for making these gifs for me)
